Experiences of the Great War

Press coverage

The fundraising activities of nurses Mairi Chisholm and Elsie Knocker was helped by the way in which their exploits caught the imagination of the press and, through it, the British public on the 'home front' during the First World War.

News of the women's adventures in Belgium was spread by a heavily-censored press eager to exploit the propaganda potential of British women holding their own at the front line.

Shown here is an example of Mairi and Elsie's picture being used in a popular magazine of the day, 'Home Chat'.
