Experiences of the Great War

Decorations and honours

Throughout the First World War, both Mairi Chisholm and Elsie Knocker were honoured for their work.

As early as January 1915 they had been given the Belgian equivalent of a knighthood when they were made Chevaliers de l'Ordre de LĂ©opold II.

In 1917, as the end of the war approached, and after British soldiers had taken control of the area around Pervyse, the two women were given the British Military Medal for their work in saving the lives of British airmen.
