Experiences of the Great War

British artillery bombardment of German lines

The amount of ammunition used by the British Forces in six weeks of fighting illustrates the tremendous casualties the Battle of the Somme brought about. According to General Haig, it totalled some 9.5 million rounds!

Ammunition ranged from relatively small bombs — '2-pounders' — to shells fired from 12-inch guns and the monstrous 15-inch 'Navy' guns.
