So horrendous were the conditions created at Passchendaele by the interminable rain, that even Douglas Haig's Generals voiced concern about the conditions the men were fighting in.

Haig records this in his own diary entry for 20 September 1917, but clearly remains optimistic:

About midnight General Gough proposed that operations be postponed on account of rain but … decided to adhere to plan. Zero hour was 5.40am. Our attacks were everywhere successful.
