Experiences of the Great War

Departure for France

General Haig kept a diary throughout the First World War. In his entry for 14 August 1914 he covers the departure of the British Army for France.

Haig hints at the difficulties of moving not only men but also the horses, which at that time were vital to the army:

'Aroused soon after it was light by sound of horses moving down the street to the Docks … My HQ are ordered to be at the Dock gates by 6pm. We find the steamer … called the Comrie Castle. The cabin accommodation on board is very limited and the saloon very small.'
