Experiences of the Great War

Haig's early life and army career

Douglas Haig was born in Edinburgh in 1861. The Haig family had made its fortune in whisky, and his early life was typical for the son of an 'establishment' family of the Victorian era.

Haig was educated at Clifton School, Bristol, and Brasenose College, Oxford, before becoming a cavalry officer at the age of 24.
