Experiences of the Great War

Douglas Haig with mother and brothers

This photo shows the young Douglas Haig (left) with his mother Rachel and his brothers John (centre) and George.

Douglas was the youngest of 11 children, and was born in 1861.

His mother was a dominant figure in his upbringing, particularly as his father suffered from ill health and died when Douglas was still in his teens.
