Experiences of the Great War

The difficulties of treating the wounded

In this diary entry, General Haig refers to the damage caused by artillery and the problems of treating the wounded during the First World War:

'A very large percentage of casualties has been caused by shell fire. The present field dressing has been found to be insufficient. The work of [locating, dressing] was often carried out under difficulties. In the trenches the medical officers state that by night when the lights are prohibited they could not see the wounds and had to feel for them before applying a dressing.'
