Experiences of the Great War

Hannan against war

It is evident from his later papers that Thomas Hannan, a socialist, was among the minority who were against the war from its outset.

References given by long-standing acquaintances for his tribunal indicate that he was closely involved with civic life, and cite his long-held anti-war beliefs as reason that he should not be conscripted into the armed forces.

One referee states: 'Mr Hannan is a man of irreproachable character and high moral convictions, and I know that he has always been a conscientious objector to war.'
