Experiences of the Great War

Anti-war movements

Not everyone shared in the euphoria at the advent of the First World War, and some feared that conscription — so long resisted in Britain — would become a reality.

Various anti-war and anti-conscription groups were established, including:

  • The Stop the War Committee
  • The Fellowship of Reconciliation
  • The National Council Against Conscription
  • The Peace Negotiations Committee.

The No-Conscription Fellowship

The largest group was the No-Conscription Fellowship (NCF) which was morally and financially supported by the Quakers. The NCF was formally established in November 1914 by Archibald Fenner Brockway, with 300 members.
