Experiences of the Great War

Dartmoor Work Centre

At Dartmoor, Thomas Hannan was one of a group of 'Glasgow boys', imprisoned for their objection to the First World War.

Many of the men were members of the Independent Labour Party, and offered comradeship and support to one another.

Life at Dartmoor was still tough, and Hannan endured solitary confinement and heavy labour at the camp.

The inmates did what they could to maintain their morale, and Hannan's papers contain several programmes for musical and dramatic productions.

Some of these were used to raise funds for supporting men and their families suffering financial hardship due to their incarceration.
