Sir Robert Gordon of Gordonstoun kept an account book when he was tutor to the young Earl of Sutherland and his brother.

He bought golf clubs and balls for them when they were at school in Dornoch.

Transcription

'Item ten poundis guven this yeir for bowes, arrowes, golff clubbes, and balls, with other necessars for his L[ordship's] exercise.'

Translation

'Item ten pounds given this year for bows, arrows, golf clubs, and balls, with other necessities for his Lordship's exercise.'
