[National Library of Scotland reference: MS.1400, 152]

Students' choice: golf or work?

James Morice was tutor to three of John Mackenzie's sons in 1712 when they were students at St Andrews University.

Golf was their favourite recreation and, in this letter of 1712, Morice asks his employer how often the boys were to be allowed to play golf.

The answer was twice a week, when the weather was fair.
