| Description | Haig in his office on a train, Western Front, during World War I. Field Marshal (Earl) Haig (1861-1928) at an office desk looking at papers. Maps of France and Belgium are placed on a stand behind him and on the wall. The only indications that this was taken on a train are the size and shape of the windows and the very narrow door. Looking at the map and using the dark line of the French/Belgian border as a guide, it is clear that when the photograph was taken, the First and Third Allied armies were quite far west, roughly north-west of Amiens. The forward German positions appear to be near Le Cateau. It is possible that this represents the position in the summer of 1918 after the German offensive and before the Allied advance to the east.
