| Description | The picture is of a formation of marching troops. They are marching along two sides of a square, the path of which is marked out with white bollards. There is well-kept grass on either side of the path. In the background woods and hills can be seen. It appears to be raining as all the soldiers are wearing shiny, black macs. They are also carrying what appears to be bed rolls as well as all their other equipment. One of the officers marching in front of the flags has looked up and is making eye contact with the camera. America entered the war at a crucial moment. Germany was in a strong position. The number of Allied troops was vastly reduced and their morale was at its lowest. Russia had also just negotiated a peace settlement. The injection of fresh troops was a welcome tonic to the flagging Allies.
