| Description | This picture is taken from the edge of a big grassy field. The field is edged with dense, lush trees which frame the sky above them. In the back of the picture there are groups of horses grazing and a few soldiers milling about. In front of this and crossing the picture from left to right is row of horses and contraptions. The first pair of horses are pulling a Red Cross carriage which is guided by two uniformed soldiers. The second pair are pulling a gun carriage which is being followed by one soldier while the other rides one of the pair. Exercises like these were not only a means of diversion from the monotony of a trench lifestyle, but were also an opportunity for the horses to be exercised and practise many of the skills they had been taught. | Description | Ernest Brooks was the first British official war photographer to be assigned to the Western Front in 1916. Previously a 'Daily Mirror' photographer, he was given the honorary rank of Second Lieutenant. His remit was to take as many photographs as possible, with as much variety as possible. Using his inconspicuous hand-held camera Brooks was free to wander, sometimes capturing his subjects unawares. Many of the images taken by Brooks were used to fuel the propaganda machine at home and abroad. Despite this Brooks, who was very aware of composition and light, produced some very artistic and thought-provoking images. |
