| Description | Two female lorry drivers, France, during World War I. One woman wearing the uniform of the VADs drives the lorry, and has one hand on the wheel as she leans out of the side window and looks at the camera. The second, who also wears the white shirt and black necktie although under a raincoat, sits in the back of the small open-backed lorry. The lorry, a Vulcan, has what we must assume to be a red cross on the side. To the left of that is written 'British Red Cross Society' and to the right 'St John's Ambulance Association.' Below that is written 'Yorkshire Mine Workers' Convoy', suggesting these are Yorkshire women. In the background can be seen a row of identical trucks. | Description | Ernest Brooks was the first British official war photographer to be assigned to the Western Front in 1916. Previously a 'Daily Mirror' photographer, he was given the honorary rank of Second Lieutenant. His remit was to take as many photographs as possible, with as much variety as possible. Using his inconspicuous hand-held camera Brooks was free to wander, sometimes capturing his subjects unawares. Many of the images taken by Brooks were used to fuel the propaganda machine at home and abroad. Despite this Brooks, who was very aware of composition and light, produced some very artistic and thought-provoking images. |
