| Description | A soldier peering out of a makeshift, but fairly sturdy, shelter. It has been made of several of the curved sections of corrugated iron normally used in the larger Nissen huts. These have been stabilised with sandbags and rocks, to avoid the hut being blown over. One of the common braziers made from a tin can stands outside the entrance. The accommodation provided for the troops was often very inadequate in winter conditions, so it was common for men to use whatever they could to make themselves more comfortable. More official billets included tents, Nissen huts, barns and even railway carriages. [Original reads: 'Winter quarters.'] |
