| Description | Unloading bacon on the quayside, Western Front, during World War I. This photograph is one of a series showing the supply of food for the troops. On the left side, there are piles of wooden boxes labelled 'bacon', with a shamrock logo which suggests it was Irish bacon. The boxes are being loaded onto wooden sack barrows and wheeled over to a row of large warehouses on the right-hand side. There are two steam-driven lorries on the quayside, but almost all the moving is being done manually. This is a useful reminder that not only were there huge supplies of food needed, but also the handling and transport of the food needed a large workforce. The photographer is unknown, but it may have been John Warwick Brooke, as there are very similar photographs thought to have been taken by him.
