| Description | Soldiers resting, Western Front, during World War I. This photograph possibly shows a reserve trench, it is certainly far enough away from the front-line that the troops are able to relax, but near enough that most of them are still wearing their steel helmets. In ones and twos, the men appear to be cooking or otherwise relaxing. Groundsheets and sandbags have been used to make seats and low shelters. Another photograph, 'Cooking dinner' shows this same group of soldiers. For many of the soldiers, possibly particularly older men with families, it must sometimes have been difficult being constantly surrounded by other people. Unlike the more posed shots, this photograph shows men creating their bit of privacy by temporarily ignoring the rest of the group. [Original reads: 'Where Tommy rests.'] |
