| Description | This photograph is one of two showing French soldiers trying to get a pair of mules out of a mud-filled shell hole. The first animal has been cut from its harness and is being encouraged to make the huge effort to drag itself out. Its yoke can be seen floating in the mud. The second animal is quite calm at this point. This pair of mules were probably pulling a transport cart of some sort. However, their difficulties are a good illustration of the futility of cavalry in trench warfare. [Original reads: 'Getting two mules out of a shell hole.'] |
