| Description | French and English at a water pump in winter. British and French soldiers standing beside a small hand-operated water pump. The pump is set up over a hole in the ice over a stream or river. It is being used to fill tin cans which are then being emptied into a horse-drawn water tank. This is one of a series of photographs which illustrate the difficulties of supplying even the most basic necessities such as water, especially in winter weather. The motley winter clothing of the French soldiers also shows how unprepared the Allies were for winter warfare. [Original reads: 'French and English at a pump.'] |
