| Description | Canadian troops and civilians on the Western Front, Belgium, during World War I. This picture is not dated and its original caption refers to it only as showing a Canadian-held outpost on the Western Front. The relaxed demeanour of the troops and the presence of what are evidently well-dressed civilians suggest, however, that the photograph was taken after the Armistice, and may depict some sort of sightseeing tour of the former front line. Canadian troops were among those advancing at the most north-easterly end of the Western Front in 1918. The 20th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force arrived in Mons on the morning of 11 November, Armistice Day, and went on to Bonn in December to become part of the Allied army of occupation.
