| Description | Annotated panorama of British Third Army troop positions at Montbrehain, France, during World War I. The annotations on the front of this photograph, the fourth of eight sections, read: 'MONTBREHAIN./ Estrees N.E. House./ Montbrehain Church l.I.a. 32. 08./ Houses in Wiaricourt./ Clump of Trees in 1.9.a./ FOLEMPRISE./ Summer House.' The annotations appear to be of troops' positions relative to landmarks in the area. The push through Montbrehain towards the Hindenburg line in September and October 1918 saw troops from the British Third, Fourth and First Armies join up with French First Army soldiers. With such vast numbers advancing in the same campaign, it was essential that officers should be issued with photos like this one mapping troop positions, to make co-ordination of movement and attack easier and safer.
