| Description | The soldiers, standing next to their mounts, look particularly proud and eager in this image. Perhaps the drill has gone really well! Horses were a vital resource at the Front both for cavalry and transport roles. As a result cavalrymen were relatively well trained and the horses were taken great care off. There are other images in the National Library of Scotland's collection of stables, training rooms and veterinary complexes. A particularly nasty chemical weapon was developed during this period called 'White Star' which was a combination of chlorine and phosgene gas. As a result in the increase in chemical warfare stricter procedures were enforced to deal with attacks. [Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE.
