| Description | This rather misty and atmospheric picture is thought to be the work of John Warwick Brooke, one of the first two official British war photographers sent to the Western Front. This image is one of many which documents the absolute destruction of French architecture and land. The returning soldiers' inability to return to 'normal' British life is understandable from these images. Gommecourt was the focus of some very aggressive action. As a result, as late as 1985 shell holes and cartridges were still easy to find in Gommecourt Park. [Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH OF THE RECENT BRITISH ADVANCE ON THE WESTERN FRONT.
