| Description | Members of the Newfoundland Regiment, during World War I. This image shows a long line of carts, each being pulled by two mules. There is one man to each cart. According to the original caption, they belong to the Newfoundland Regiment. The convoy, which is moving through a small town or village, is being led by two men on horseback. There are no civilians visible in the street, only uniformed men. This photograph was taken by the British official photographer, John Warwick Brooke. Sent to the Western Front in 1916, his remit was to take as many photographs of as varied a nature as possible. Whilst it was generally deemed unacceptable to capture certain images, in particular of the dead or maimed, Warwick Brooke's body of work gives a reasonably comprehensive visual account of the war.
