| Description | Refugees hitching a lift, France. This photograph shows a woman and a small boy taking a lift on the back of a French Army horse-drawn field kitchen. Another refugee is following, pushing a pram full of possessions. In some parts of the Western Front, people had to flee their homes several times during the war. An American aid worker wrote of one evacuation, 'The scenes were heartrending, families scattered, sacks and furniture and animals saved thus far abandoned for lack of space ... '. [Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. Refugees getting a lift on a French cooker.'] |
