| Description | A line of men disappearing off the left edge of the photograph. They are wearing light-coloured uniforms and pillar-box caps. They are all jabbing their bayonets into a sack-cloth pillow on the ground. Their muscles are all straining and they are at a narrow angle to the ground. Their faces are turned away from the camera. Another officer is walking along behind them towards the camera, checking their feet. The countryside is empty and rural. Many of the recruits towards the end of the war had no previous military or fighting experience. As a result training was very important with drilling forming a core part of this.
