| Description | A pile of rubble which is backed by a field. The back of this field is edged with a line of trees in the distance. Within this field two explosions have just occurred- leaving two plumes of smoke behind them. The field is divided from the rubble by a wire fence suggesting that the rubble was once a farm building of some description. There are groups of soldiers standing in amongst the debris. They have all paused from working and are looking at the explosions. Thelus was in the area around Vimy which was occupied by Canadian troops 1916-18. The cemetery for Canadian soldiers who served on the Vimy Ridge, as a result, is at Thelus (Pas de Calais). | Description | Ernest Brooks was the first British official war photographer to be assigned to the Western Front in 1916. Previously a 'Daily Mirror' photographer, he was given the honorary rank of Second Lieutenant. His remit was to take as many photographs as possible, with as much variety as possible. Using his inconspicuous hand-held camera Brooks was free to wander, sometimes capturing his subjects unawares. Many of the images taken by Brooks were used to fuel the propaganda machine at home and abroad. Despite this Brooks, who was very aware of composition and light, produced some very artistic and thought-provoking images. |
