| Description | Australian soldiers resting in a field. According to the existing caption a cookhouse has been set up. The men are milling about and relaxing. One man sits reading a newspaper, whilst others happily chat with one another. There is a lot of equipment scattered over the ground, and some clothes or blankets look as if they have been hung up to dry. There are a number of horse-drawn carts or carriages, possibly mobile kitchens, with what appear to be chimneys attached. One or two horses are visible, grazing in the background. Providing fresh and hot food to soldiers in the trenches was very difficult. Even if food was freshly prepared for the men, by the time it reached the front line it was often cold and stale. Soldiers in the trenches were rarely, if ever, treated to a hot and nutritious meal. [Original reads: 'Australian cookhouse in the field.'] |
