| Description | Five soldiers and their graveyard dugout, France. Five soldiers are standing in quite a steep entrance to a dugout. They are fully armed, equipped and uniformed and are wearing quite severe expressions. Their boots and the bottom of their trousers are caked in mud, despite the ground being dry now. Perched above the entrance is a wrought iron hand rail while the rest of the entrance is surrounded by large chunks of masonry. In the background, amongst the overgrown weeds, are the headstones of the graveyard. This picture not only illustrates the damage caused to French property during the course of the war but also the lack of regular housing for the soldiers and as a result some of the unusual places they ended up housing themselves. | Description | Ernest Brooks was the first British official war photographer to be assigned to the Western Front in 1916. Previously a 'Daily Mirror' photographer, he was given the honorary rank of Second Lieutenant. His remit was to take as many photographs as possible, with as much variety as possible. Using his inconspicuous hand-held camera Brooks was free to wander, sometimes capturing his subjects unawares. Many of the images taken by Brooks were used to fuel the propaganda machine at home and abroad. Despite this Brooks, who was very aware of composition and light, produced some very artistic and thought-provoking images. |
