| Description | Horse and soldier transporting boots. A soldier is leading a small horse along a boggy path. The path is inches deep in wet mud discernable by the deep imprint round the soldiers boot and the fact that the horses hooves are no longer visible. The soldier is uniformed and wearing a helmet. Rather than cloth puttees though he is wearing long lace-up boots. The horse is absolutely laden with the same type of boot. In the background the barren landscape is visible. Horses, due to their reliability and ability to travel over most terrains were crucial to transportation during World War I. [Original reads: 'Horse laden with trench boots on the Somme Front.'] |

| Description | Ernest Brooks was the first British official war photographer to be assigned to the Western Front in 1916. Previously a 'Daily Mirror' photographer, he was given the honorary rank of Second Lieutenant. His remit was to take as many photographs as possible, with as much variety as possible. Using his inconspicuous hand-held camera Brooks was free to wander, sometimes capturing his subjects unawares. Many of the images taken by Brooks were used to fuel the propaganda machine at home and abroad. Despite this Brooks, who was very aware of composition and light, produced some very artistic and thought-provoking images. |
