| Description | Ruined interior of Albert Cathedral, 1918. This image illustrates the damage caused by heavy artillery. In April 1918 Albert Cathedral was destroyed by British gunfire, in order to stop the Germans using its tower as an artillery observation post. Scenes such as this were commonly used as propaganda, intended to reaffirm resolve against the enemy. Some British papers of the time were somewhat economical with the truth, claiming the Germans destroyed the cathedral! [Original reads: 'The ruined interior of Albert Cathedral.'] |
