In the Exercises letters very faintly Mnimled or entirely nlent
are 2Jrinted in italics.
The short, indefinite sound of ao is indicaied by inverting the
letters ivhich represent it; that is, inverted a and e i)i the
Exercises sound lilce o and e in the English word ' cover.''
Unaspirated 1 and n in an initial position are ivritten double,
to indicate their pecidiar sound (50, 51, 56, 57). This is con-
tinued all through the Reading Lessons, as some knowledge of
Gaelic or its Grammar is necessary before the reader can
distingnixli the aspirated and non-aspirated ligiiids.
