Semi-Auxiliaries.
The verbs corresponding to Eng. may, must, and can are
faodaidli, fcumaidk, imiridh, and is eudar or Jheudar, and
i'y urrainn(doinh) ; dependent forms — ■faod,f'eum, and urrainn.
Past tense — rZ/i' fhaodadh, dh'fheumadh, and // urrainn, Avith
dept. forms for the first two — faodadh and fei(madh, is the
same as the subjunctive (/A' /haodainn, dh' fheumainn, and
/'' urrainn (donih). Thus — I ma}' stand =faodaidli mi seasamli,
where seasamh is the inf.
Defective verbs are arsa, quoth, as ar.s' i'rt(/ = said they;,
fheaò, had ahnost, thfaù mi tuiteam = I ahiiost fell ; /eiich,
behold ! .■<iutkad, proceed thou ; tiur/ainn, come thou ; troldiad,
come hither ; thngad, get out !
THE ADVERB.
Adverbs are formed from adjectives by prefixing gu, which
has h- before a vowel, as, (ju math, -well; gu fior, truly; gii,
h-ard, highly, above.
The words ro, gh', and finr (|ualify adjectives and denote a
high degree of quality. Cho, with ri or agua as correlative, is
equal to Eng. as ... . an : cho tuath ri cii, as fast as a dog ;
cho luath agus = SLS soon as. Mir means " at all."

fhathast, fòs, yet riamh, ever
chaoidh, ever daonnan, a/ ways
Phrases : — a nis, now ; an dràsta, just now ; a rithist,
again ; an diugh, to-day ; an de, yesterday ; am màireach,

second day after to-morrow ; an nochd, to-night ; an raoir, last
night ; an uraidh, last year ; am feasda and gu hràth, for ever.
