of judgment, had not been an abfolute ftranger

his authority to fo idle a romance. The difcuf-
fidn of this popular error, which I am to give
in the fequel of thefe diifertations, will juftify
thefe flridtures on fo eminent a hillorian as Dr,
Robertfon.
