We take it for granted that the reader is now pre-
pared to ascend with us another step in the ladder
of observation, and survey that rather occult object
called Cabala. Thus, then, Johnson on the term : —

We may be allowed a doubt whether this threefold
explication have furnished the learner with the
ideal meaning of this important trisyllable. He
is informed, it is true, that the French for the same
term is Cabale^ and the Hebrew Kble ; but where
is the French — where is the Hebrew from ? Where
