Ces vers donnent une représentation remarquablement claire et
nette d'un montagnard écossais dans son costume complet à cette
époque. Le Capitaine Campbell était à la tête d'une compagnie de la
milice d'Argyll à la bataille de Culloden (1746) du côté royaliste.
Après on l'envoya punir les ' rebelles ' dans les districts sauvagea de
Moidart et Arisaig où il agit avec grande considération et tolérance.
Plus tard il devint un des capitaines de la garde d'Edimbourg où il
fut un des meilleurs amis du poète. Il mourut en 1774.
