The original church, now in ruins in the
churchyard at St. Combs, must have been

the name of the village of recent date

about 1720, but reconstructed and added to

small transept, porch and vestry, and has
sittings for 200 persons : there is a brass by
the chancel arch in memory of Lady Ara-
bella Diana, wife of Sir Alexander Banner-
man bart. d. 1869, and in the churchyard is
the grave of Sir Alexander Bannerman bart.
of Elsick and Orimonmogate, d. 1877.

Carnegie ; and Cairness, the seat of Sir
James Lyle Mackay G.C.M.G., K.C.I.E.

LUMPHANAN parish has a station on
the Deeside railway, about 26 miles west
from Aberdeen and 16 north-east from
Ballater ; the parish, which is about six
miles in length and four in breadth, is in
the Aberdeen small debt court district. The
name signifies " the bare little valley," but
this designation is not in the present day
applicable to the lowlands, which are well
cultivated and fruitful. This is the district
in which Macbeth is said to have been slain
by Macduff in the year 1057 ; the spot on
which tradition asserts the combat to have
taken place is about a mile north from the
kirk, on the brow of a hill, where a large
cairn of stones (in the midst of which a
stone coffin was found some time ago) has
been raised commemorative of the event,
and corroborative of the finale of Shake-
speare's drama. The principal landowners
are Dr. Robert Farquharson M.P., M.D.,
D.L., J.P. of Finzean, Aboyne, Lord Sem-
pill and the trustees of the late Robert
Smith esq. The parish consists of 8,754
acres; rateable value, £5,423; population
in 1891, 992, and in 1901, 966.
