TpHE powers of the Company have been greatly extended by the Improvement of
Land Act, 1899, and Loans may now be negotiated for the foHowing among
uther purposes, viz. : —
L Drainage, Distribution of Sewage, Reclamation, Clearing, Trenching, and Planting.
2. Irrigation, Warping, Weiring, Sea Walls, and Embanking of Land, and Straighten
ing and Improving Streams and Watercourses.
3. Farm Houses and other Buildings, Labourers' and Artisans' Cottages.
4. Water Supply, Saw and other Mills, Wells, Ponds, Reservoirs, Watercourses,
Bridges, and Works and Machinery for Supply and Distribution of Water
for Agricultural, Manufacturing, Domestic, or other purposes.
5. Enclosing and dividing Land, and Making and Straightening Marches and Fences
by Walls, Hedges, Dykes, and by Iron, Wire, or other Fences.
6. Jetties, Piers, or Landing Places on Lakes, Rivers, Sea or Tidal Waters, for
Agricultural, Farming, and Mining purposes.
7. Making Roads, Permanent Tramways and Railways, as well as Streets, Roads,
Sewers, and other Works necessary in connection with the conversion of
Land into Building Land.
8. Trial Pits for Mines, and other preliminary work necessary or proper in connection
therewith.
9. Various other Works, including the Reconstruction, Enlargement, or Improvement
of those above specified — all being subject to approval of the Board of
Agriculture.
The period of Charge for the Improvements may be any term approved by the
Board of Agriculture not exceeding 40 years.
The Company is empowered to transact with every Landowner, being a "fiar,
] iferenter, heir of entail, heir-apparent, or disponee, or having a limited but not less than
a life interest in the land ; and the husband, tutor, curator, or other guardian or trustee
of any such person, and every trustee having or acting for, or representing a person having
a like interest in the land, which persons respectively shall be in the actual possession of
the land, or in receipt of the rents payable on the tacks, leases, or tenancies of the tenants
in the actual possession thereof."
