1346 NESTING.
Bound Skerries, Brurie Skerries, G-runa
Skerries and Housie Skerries, as well as
the kirktowns of Lunna and Nesting, which
contain the tw.o churches of the Mainland
portion of the parish.
Whaleay Island lies to the east of Main'
land, from which it is divided by Lunna
Sound, and is about 15 miles north-east from
Lerwick, with which town it has steam
communication three times a week. There
is an Established church on the island.
The SkerrieB Islands (or Out Skerries)
lie a little to the north-east of Whalsay.
On Bound Skerries Island is a light-
house.
Whalsay and Skerries form a quoad sacra
pariBh. The population in 1901 was 1,090.
Vidian is a- hamlet on Mainland, with a
steamer pier and post office, about 24 miles
north from Lerwick, to which town a
steamer sails onoe a week. The total area
of the parish, including Lunnasting, Whal-
say and Out Skerries, is 30,983 acres ; acre-
age of Nesliing proper being 13,623; of
Lunnasting, 11,806, and of Whalsay, 4,881,
and the Skerries, 773 ; rateable value of the
entire parish ia. £2,182.
The population of the entire parish in
1901 was 2,480, being 1,381 in Nesting and
Lunnasting (Mainland. Island), 975 in Whal-
say and 124 in the four Skerries.

NORTHMAVINE is a parish, in Zet-
land poor combination and Lerwick small
debt court district. It comprises the most
northerly portion of Mainland Island, is
about 15 miles in length and from 5 to 10
in breadth. Hillswick, on the west side, is
the principal village. The parish church
is here, and is 36 miles north-north-west by
road from Lerwick. Ollaberry is also a
small vilbige on the east side, about 7 miles
from Hillswick. The area is 49,037 acres;
rateable value, £2,651; population in 1901,
2,014.
