LOCHRT7TTON is a parish at the north-
eastern extremity of the stewartry, 5 miles
south-west from Dumfries.its greatest length
being 5^ miles and breadth 4£ miles; it
is bounded on the north by the parishes of
Kirkpatrick and Terregles, east by Tro-
queer, south by Kirkgunzeon and west by
Urr, and is In the small debt court of Kirk-
cudbright, occasional courts being held at
Maxwelltown. At the base of a range of
hills in the parish lies the village of Loch-
foot, which is 2 miles north-west from
Lochanhead station on the Castle Douglas
and Dumfries section of the Glasgow and
South Western railway; the Lochfoot lake
is a fine sheet of water, 1 mile long by
half a mile broad, and provides the in-
habitants of Dumfries and neighbourhood
with an unfailing supply of water. On
one of the hills here the remains of
a Druidical circle still exist. Herbert
Constable Maxwell-Stuart esq. of Scarth-
ingwell Hall, Tadcaster, Yorks, is the
principal landowner. The soil is of a light
loam, subsoil, clay. The chief crops are
oats, roots and potatoes. The area com-
prises 7,739 acres; rateable value, £6,668;
the population in 1891 was 534, and in 1901,
497.

MAXWELLTOWN", -which forms part
of the parliamentary burgh of Dumfries, is
a burgh of barony and town in the parish
of Troqueer, in the stewartry of Kirk-
cudbright, and is divided from Dumfries
town by the river Nith, over which are
three bridges, one of which is an ancient
structure coeval with the Franciscan Monas-
tery, to which its bridge tolls once be-
longed. The observatory and the gaol are
both in this suburb. Full particulars and

MINNIGAFF is a large parish, in tho
western part of the stewartry of Kirkcud-
bright, 17 miles in length by il in breadth;
it is bounded on the north by the county of
Ayr and the parish of Carsphairn, on the
north-east by Kells, south-east by Girthon
and Kirkmabreck, and on the west by the
river Cree, over which there is a bridge
uniting it to the parish of Penninghame
and the. town of Newton Stewart. The
parish in in the small debt court district
of Castle Douglas, and has a stnton at Pal-
nure, 3 miles south-east from Oree Bridge,
on the Portpatrick and Wigtownshire joint
railway. In the lower parts the land has
been a good deal improved, especially to-
wards the margin of the Cree, which is
navigable for several miles and produces
excellent fish of various kinds, including
an abundance of salmon. The major
portion of the parish is devoted to pasture-
age, and sustains large flocks of sheep and
numerous herds of black cattle. Messrs.
R. & W. Callander, timber merchants and
saw mill proprietors, have extensive works
here. The parish includes part of the town
of Newtnn Stewart, Wigtownshire (which
see). Kirroughtree, the seat of Major
Arthur C. Armitage D.L., J.P. within a
mile of Newton Stewart, but in the parish
of Minnigaff, is beautifully situated on the
side of a hill, surrounded by fine woods, and
intersected by pleasant winding paths; in
the grounds is a romantic grotto, formed
out of an old stone quarry. Palnure is a
village with a station on the Portpatrick
and Wigtownshire Joint railway, and a
small quay, near the confluence of the Pal-
nure burn with the river Cree, 3 miles
south-east from Newton Stewart and 4
north-west from Creetown. The area com-
prises 87,922 acres ; rateable value,
£14,958; the population in 1891 was 1,425,
of whom 40G were in Newton Stewart, and
1901, 1,309; of this number Newton
Stewart contained 394.
