Hoddam Castle, finely situated on the river
Annan, about 2£ miles west from Eccle-
fechan, is the seat of Edward Brook esq.
who, as principal landowner and superior,
claims certain customs for all standings
and for all cattle exposed for sale. Here
-was born, 4 Dec. 1796, Thomas Carlyle,
now world renowned as a moral philoso-
pher and historian. His father, James
Carlyle, was by trade a mason, and sent
him" first, in 1805, to the Grammar school
at Annan, and afterwards, in Nov. 1809,
when onlv 14 years of age. to the Uni-
versity of "Edinburgh. Carlyle subsequentlv
became mathematical tutor at Annan
school, and in 1816 was appointed master
of the school at Kirkcaldy, on leaving
which in 1818, he went to Edinburgh, and
in 1822 was tutor there to the sons of a
Mr. Buller; in 1825 he took a farm at
Hoddam hill, and in 1826 married Jane
Baillie Welsh, daughter of ihe laird of
Craigenputtoek, to which place he removed
in 1828, but in the summer of 18.14 he
established himself at the now famous
house, 5 Chevne row. Chelsea, where he
resided until "his death, 4 Eeb. 1881, and
here several of his works, including his
" Life of Frederick the Great," completed
in 1865, were written ; in 1866 he was
chosen Lord Hector of Edinburgh Univer-
sity, but in the same year lost his wife,
a blow from which he never rallied. The
remains of the great philosopher were
brought from London, and interred in the
parish churchyard here, and both the cot-
tage in which he was horn and his house
in Chelsea are now religiously preserved.
and are open to the inspection of visitors.
Within a short distance of the village are
the remains of two camps, one of which is
said to be one of the most complete in
Scotland. The land in Hoddam parish is
of the best quality, and is under a superior
system of cultivation. The area of the
parish of Hoddam comprises 7,514 acres ;
rateable value being £11,777 ; the popula
tion in 1901 was 1.521, including 785 in
the village of Ecclefechan. and in 1891
1.533. including 746 in the village of
Ecclefechan.
