HOUNDWOOB is a quoad sacra parish
and district forming the southern portion
of the large civil parish of Coldingham, and
contains the villages of Reston, Auchencrow
and Grant's House; it is bounded on the
north by the Berwick and Dunbar section
of the North British railway, and has sta-
tions at Reston and Grant's House.
Reston is a village pleasantly situated on
the banks of the Eye, in the parish of Cold-
ingham, 3 miles south from Coldingham
village and about 9 north-west from Duns,
with a station on the North British railway
and junction of the line to St. Bo6wells.
Live stock sales are held every alternate
Monday.
Auchencrow is a village lying between
Reston, and Chirnside and about 24 miles
from each place. The nearest railway
station is Reston Junction, 2£ miles distant,
on the North British railway.
Grant's House is a village or hamlet in
the parish and on the road to Edinburgh,
with a station on the North British railway,
and is 7 miles from Coldingham, 8 from
Ayton and 5 from Cockburnspath. The
place derives its name from a person named
Grant, the contractor for making the high
road to Edinburgh, who erected a cottage
for himself, now called Grant's House Inn.
There is a United Free church here, opened
in March, 1888.
The population of the ecclesiastical parish
in 1S91 was 1,360, and in 1901, 1,308.
