BTTRNMOTJTH (or Rose and Burn-
mouth) is a small fishing village in the
parish of Ay ton, with a station on the
North British railway, and about 2^ miles
from Ay ton and 6 from Berwick, and is
situated on a harbour at the foot of an
almost perpendicular ledge of rock. The
heights in the vicinity afford very beautiful
and varied scenery, extending to the Elldons
on the south, Lammermoor on the west,
and Bamborough on the east. A number
of boats are employed here for herring
fishing, and others of a larger class are
employed for white fishing in the winter
season. There is a United Free church.
Ross is a conjoint village with Burn-
mouth, but in the parish of Mordington.
The population 13 included with that of
Ay ton.

CHANNELKIRK is a parish, situated
among the Lammermoor hills, 1£ miles
from Oxton station on the Lauder branch
of the North British railway, in the small
debt court district of Lauder and Kelso
poor law combination. The parish is
traversed by several rivulets, which
unitedly form the river Leader, or Lauder,
but the hills are mostly covered with
heath, and are very bleak and unpro-
ductive.
Ugston, now called Oxton, with a station
on the Lauder branch of the North British
railway, and about 4 miles north-north-
west "from Lauder, on the south of the
Edinburgh road and in the upper part of
the vale of the Leader, is now the only
village in the parish of Channelkirk, the
village of that name, about 2 miles west
of Oxton, being now represented only by
the church and the manse belonging to it.
Area of the parish, about 14,191 acres ;
rateable value, £5,929; population in 1891,
545, and in 1901, 568.

CHIRNSIDE is a parish in the small
debt court district of Ayton, and in Kelso
poor combination, lying *to the east of the
Merse and on the north side of the Whit-
adder, and extending 4 miles in length by
about 3 in breadth. The village, situated
on an eminence affording extensive views,
is 50 miles east-by-south from Edinburgh,
13* north-north-cast from Greenlaw, 9
north-west from Berwick and 6 north-east
from Duns, and has a station 1 mile dis-
tant, on the North British Railway; it con-
sists of two streets, the buildings of which
are for the most part detached and
straggling, and extend nearly a mile in
length, but in the upper part of the village
are several good stone houses ; an excellent
supply of water is brought from about a
mile distant. There is a reading room and
library and a children's mission hall.
Besides a church of the Establishment
there are United Free churches. The es-
tate of Ninewells, the family 'seat of the
Humes, is in this neighbourhood, and
David Hume, the celebrated historian,
though born in Edinburgh, 26 April, 1711,
was from his infancy brought up in this
parish ; the mansion is at present occupied
by Charles Forbes esq. In this locality are
some remains of ancient encampments.
Alexander Harold Mitchell-Innes esq. J.P.,
who is lord of the manor, and Lord Tweed-
mouth P.C. are the principal landowners.
Area, 5,553 acres; the rateable value is
£11,290; the population in 1891 was 1,459,
and in 1901, 1,580.
Chirnside Bridge is a hamlet about 1
mile west, and here the Whitadder stream
is crossed by a good bridge and also by a
stone viaduct carrying the railway. On the
banks of the river a species of gypsum is
found, and in other parts of the district
marl is obtained abundantly. Chirnside
railway station is situated in this hamlet.
