MONKTON and PRESTWICK
form a parish in the district of, Kyle, which
also includes New Prestwick, a suburb of
Ayr.
Prestwick, or Prestevieke, a small village
about two- miles from Ayr, with a station
oo the Glasgow and South Western rail-
way, was at one period a place of some
consequence, having been created a burgh
of- barony at an early date; and its charter
renewed by James VI. in 1600, granted to
it' a weekly market and an annual fair, but
the market has fallen into disuse. Thi
market cross, which is of considerable
antiquity, still exists, and there is a
council house in which the bailies and free
men meet quarterly to regulate u.e affair;
of the burgh. At Prestwick there are
fine golf links, where the ancient game has
been played for many years. The Prest-
wick Golf Club has a large and handsome
club house, and there is also the St.
Nicholas Club, both having a large number
of members. The St. Cuthbert's Links
were opened May 5th, 1890. Population in
1001 was 2,766.
Monkton is a village on the sea coast, and
on the road to Glasgow, 4 miles north from
Ayr, and also has a station about one mile
distant on the Glasgow and South Western
railway. The population in 1001 was 486.
Area of the parish comprises 3,779 acres;
rateable value, £23,488. The population in
1901 was 3,854.
