DALJARROCK, see Colmonell.
DALMELLING-TON is a parish and
village, the latter being a burgh of barony,
with a station on the Glasgow and South
Western and the North British railways, 72
mile6 south-west from Edinburgh, 49 south
of Glasgow, 42 north-west of Dumfries, 24
south-south-east of Kilmarnock, 15 south-
east of Ayr, 14 east of Maybole, 12 south of
Old Cumnock and 7 east of Straiton, situ-
ated on the north bank of the water of
Doon. and near to the base of an eminence,
from the summit of which a fine view is
obtained. The parish is in the poor com-
bination of Kyle and the small debt court
district of Ayr, and extends 9 miles from
north-west to south-east by 3 to 5 in breadth
and is bounded on the south-west by Strar
ton, north by Dalrymple and Ochiltree and
west by New Cumnock ; about 3 miles south
of the village is Loch Doon, celebrated for
its fine trout and a great resort for anglers
boats are furnished by the proprietors of
the hotels at this place — the Black Bull and
the Eglinton. The loch is a beautiful sheet
of water, with a hard rocky shcre, extend-
ing 8 miles in length and 1 in breadth
and abounding with trout of fine flavour.
In 1S26 a fishing party discovered at the
bottom of the loch what appeared to be
boats, and, having obtained the necessary
assistance, they succeeded in raising three
canoes, the largest measuring 24 feet in
length by 4 in breadth, hewn out of a solid
log of oak. Two were much decayed, but
the third was so little impaired as to allow
of its beinc floated, on the surface, with a
person in it, for a considerable time ; two
are now preserved at the head of Ness Glen,
by Mrs. McAdam, of Craigengillan, for
the inspection of visitors, and the third
is in the Kelvin Grove Museum at Glasgow
On an island in the lake are the remains
of Balloch Castle, in which, in June, 1306
after the battle of Methven, Sir Chrysta'i
Seton, brother-in-law to Robert Bruce, took
refuge, but the castle being stormed he
was captured and executed at Dumfries.
In Dalmellington is a public library and
a reading room, furnished with standard
works, periodicals and newspapers; a sum
has been left in trust for the support of
the institute, and for a bursary. About
3 miles north-west of Dalmellington,
on the road to Ayr, are the extensive
Dalmellington iron works and collieries
with six blast furnaceB. This company
butlt the villages of Craig Mark, Waterside,
Lethan Hill, Burnfoot Hill and Benwhat.
The village of WATERSIDE has a station
on the Glasgow and South Western railway,
and is lighted by gas. The total population
upwards of 3,500. Mrs. McAdam, of
Craigengillan ; Colonel the Hon. Augustus
Murray Cathcart, of Kirkby Malzeard,
Torks; the Duke of Portland K.G., P.C.,
G.C.V.O. and the trustees of H. Buchanan
esq. of Downieston, are the principal land-
owners. The area comprises 17,818 acres;
rateable value, £24,932; the population in
1891 was 6,383, and in 1901, 5,261 in the
civil and 5,118 in the ecclesiastical parish.
