CLACHAN-CANTYRE is a vil-
lage in the parish of Kilcalmonell and poor
combination of Lochgilphead, lying on the
road from Tarbert to Campbeltown, 11 miles
south-west of the former and 27 north-east
of the latter, the road following the
western shore of Cantyre through most of
its course. The parish church is in this
village. A little east of Clachan is Balina-
kill, the residence of John McKinnon esq.
who is the proprietor of the larger part of
the village; the other portion is in the
estate of Ronachan, and belongs to Peter
McKinnon esq. of Ronachan, whose resi-
dence is 2 miles south-west of the village.
In the vicinity, on a hill called Danskeig,
to the north-west, is a vitrified fort on a
large scale, and another contiguous stone
fort in ruins ; and among the hills to the
east are several fresh water lochs, well
stocked with trout.

COLL a parish in Mull poor combination,
is an island lying about 2 miles north of
Three and 10 west of Ardnamurchan
Point; it is 13 miles from north to south
by a breadth of 2 to 4 miles ; its coast is
indented by several small bays (the largest,
known as Loch Breachacha, runs about a
mile into the land), but there is only one
tolerable harbour, called Arinagour. Close
to the modern castle, the residence of Col.
John Lome Stewart D.L., J.P. who is the
proprietor of the island, are the ruins of
a castle. The chief industry is cheese
making, for which Coll has attained a
wide reputation. A fair is held here in
May and October, on the Tuesday before
those in Mull. The area comprises 18,316
acres; valuation, 1902-3, £3,395; the popu-
lation in 1901 was 432.

COLONSAY and ORONSAY are
islands lying to the west of Jura and
south of the mouth of the Firth of Lorn.
11 miles south of the Ross of Mull, and
together form a united parish about 12
miles in length. Oronsay, the most south-
ern, being only 2 miles in extent ; the
division between the two islands is a
narrow strait, dry at low water. It wai
here that St. Columba and St. Oran landed
on their arrival from Ireland in 563, and
on Colonsay they first founded their col-
lege, moving later on to lona. An abbey
was founded here at a subsequent date.
but no remains of it can now be traced.
but on Oronsay there are extensive remains
of a priory founded in the 14th century
consisting of a church, 60 by 18 feet, and
a large cloister, besides a fine sculptured
cross. Colonsay is the property of Duncan
McNeill esq. "The area of the united
parish is 11,076 acres ; rateable value ;
£2,414; the population in 1891 was 381
and in 1901, 313, of w-hom 301 were in
Colonsay.

CRAIGNISH is a parish in the upper
portion of the Sound of Jura, a consider-
able part of it forming a peninsula on the
west side of Loch Craignish, its southerly
point, Point Craignish, lying 4 miles west
of the north point of Jura; it is bounded
north by Kilninver, and east by Kilmartin,
the south and west lying open to the sea;
its extent is about 10 miles from north to
south and 4 broad. The Loch of Craig-
nish contains a chain of small islands
running along the centre of the loch.

The area comprises 9,283 acres ; rateable

DUNOON, a seaside town and police
burgh, and KILMTJN together form a
parish in the poor combination of Greenock,
but in the south-eastern district of Argyll-
shire : the burgh, which is situated on the
Firth of Clyde, is 3 miles south of Holy
Loch, 4 from Greenock railway station, on
the opposite side of the Clyde, 27 south-
east of Inveraray, 30 west of Glasgow,
and 8 west of Greenock; Kilmun is 6£
miles from Dunoon : this burgh is the
head of a small debt court district, and is
governed by a provost, two bailies and
nine commissioners : it has no regular
trade, but depends upon its summer
visitors.
