DALBEATTIE-IN-URR,
PALNACKIE-IN-BUITTLE AND KIPPFORD-IN-COLVEND.
DALBEATTIE is a bnrgh in the parish of Urr, union and
Stewart court of Kirkcudbright, 87 miles s.s.w. from Edin-
burgh, 13% n. by e. from Kirkcudbright, the like distance s.w. from
Dumfries, and 6 from Castle Douglas, most eligibly situated on the
Dalbeattie Burn, a rivulet which falls into the Water of Urr, which
latter is here navigable lor vessels of seventy or eighty tons. This
harbour, which is called Dub-o'-Hass, is about five miles from the
Solway Firth, and is greatly improved. A line of railway from
Dumfries to Portpatrick, Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright passes
through this place, and possesses a station here. The burgh has
great advantages in respect to situation for a maritime trade, having
a communication by sea with the western ports, and, by means of
the before-mentioned railway, with many large inland towns; it
possesses some large falls of water, capable of turning any kind of
machinery. The mills now in operation are a paper, a bobbin, a
corn mill and two for sawing timber, the whole propelled by water ;
there is also an extensive iron forge, the hammers of which are also
worked by the same power. Large granite quarries and granite
polishing works are in this neighbourhood worked by the Messrs.
D. H. & J. Newall and others, wuo employ some hundreds of men.
In the town are places of worship for Presbyterians, Evangelical
Unionists and Roman Catholics ; there are also a mechanics' in-
stitute and reading room, four comfortable inns and a fine bowling
green. About lour miles north-east from Dalbeattie is Corra
Castle, formerly the residence of Lord Henies, but now the pro-
perty of the Maxwells, of Terrigles. It is a tine old ruin, and men-
tioned as the place where Mary Queen of Scots passed a night on
her way for embarcation at the Solway Firth to England, after the
battle at Langside Moor. Within the parish, on the banks of the
river about a mile below Urr church, is the Mote of Urr, an artificial
mount rising from the centre of elevated circles, and used in the
primitive times as a court of judicature by the petty chiefs of this
district of Galloway. The government of the bnrgh is vested in
nine commissioners, who are elected by the ratepayers of the three
wards into which the burgh is divided. The town is lighted with
gas. The parish of Urr contains an area of 15,426 statute acres,
and in 1881 the population was 5,490, of this number 3,865 were re-
turned for Dalbeattie.
Palnackie, or Garden, is the principal village in the parish of
Buittle, parochial union and Stewart court of Kirkcudbright, 18
miles a.w. from Dumfries, 14 n- from Kirkcudbright, and 6 s. of
Castle Douglas, agreeably situated on the Water of Urr, where there
is a good harbour, having at ordinary spring tides a depth of thirty
feet of water, and capable of receiving vessels of two hundred tons
burthen. Since the extension of the railway system in the
Stewartry, the fishing trade has greatly fallen away. It used to
be the chief port for supplying the surrounding neighbourhood
with coal and various other sea- borne necessaries. The parish is
bounded on the east by the Urr, on the south by the Solway Firth,
and on the west by Kelton. It is a fertile and agricultural district,
eight miles in length and three in breadth, and contaius an area of
11,391 statute acres, with a population in 1881 of 991.
Colvend is a parish adjoining Kirkbeam. It is entirely agricul-
tural, and is only remarkable for its scenery. Along the coast of
Colvend and Southwick there are several large caves, and three of
the hills in the united parish exceed 1,300 feet in height. There
are also several large heaps of stones, one of which, near Craigneuk
Point, is called " Coulthart's Cairn," and is supposed to be con-
nected in some way with the ancient Galloway family of Coulthart,
of Coulthart. Kippford and Rockliffe are two villages in this
parish, which has an area of 18,666 acres, and in 1881 had a popu-
lation of 1,281.
